So let’s start with saying that I’ve always thought Derek Davis has had a great singing voice. Babylon A.D. has always been underrated as far as I’m concerned. And Davis’ voice was always front and center. So I was curious, what will this solo release sound like. After all, I’m familiar with him singing hard rock and melodic heavy metal. After I gave this spin, I quickly realized how much of this fiery soul driven vocal style has been present in the previous Babylon A.D. albums. So, really Derek Davis still sounds just like Derek Davis always has. The big change here is the musical style, but surprisingly not a huge departure from his rock efforts. Think of it as the funky soul element of Babylon A.D. minus the heavy guitars and you’ve got an idea of what Revolutionary Soul is all about. It’s actually quite a good album and I really think most of his rock fans will love this, providing they just give it a chance. The title track is really outstanding. I really dig a lot of the songs here with Think About It, Nobody Knows When You’re Down And Out, King Of Fools, Picture Of Love And All The Roads being my favorites along side the title track. What’s even more impressive is that Derek Davis not only performs the vocals, produced, but also arranged and played all of the instruments on Revolutionary Soul. That’s an incredible feat in itself, if you ask me. For fans of Babylon A.D. there’s plenty to like here as it’s not hard to imagine with a slight reworking, many of these songs being Babylon A.D. tracks. Davis’ voice has enough grit and soul to really carry this material to new heights. The material is really strong and he sings with real conviction and emotion throughout. Check this out for a cool, funky soulful, break from metal land.
