Review:

Ever since the death of the late, great Ronnie James Dio, metal music hasn’t just been the same. It always feels like something is missing, just knowing that he’s gone.  Luckily, there has been a lot of new, previously unreleased material coming from the Dio archives and now Rhino Records have reissued the first two Black Sabbath albums featuring Ronnie James Dio with Mob Rules And Heaven And Hell Deluxe Editions.  When I heard these were being released, I was itching to give them a listen and I am not disappointed.  The remastered sound is really good, but most of all I’m excited by the extra material that’s included.  Starting with Heaven And Hell, the second disc is all previously unreleased material with 2 Live B-Sides, a rare Lady Evil Mono version, and then four live tracks from Hartford CT recorded in 1980 and 4 more live tracks from The Hammersmith Oden in London during their 1982 tour. I’m sure a lot of these were floating around as bootlegs somewhere, but the sound quality on this release is really good, unlike much of what you hear on bootleg releases. Mob Rules has the remastered original album on disc 1, plus a couple of remixed and remastered tracks along with more great songs from a different live recording at The Hammersmith Odeon in 1981 and two tracks of a live concert recorded in Portland Oregon in 1982.  The live songs on both remastered albums are simply electric and make these remastered editions a must-have collector’s item. All of the included live tracks make you feel like a time traveler to a great time gone by.  And, if I’m being honest, it’s hard to fathom that rock music is ever likely to recapture the energy and brilliance of that time again.  Black Sabbath was hitting their new invigorated stride after they parted ways with original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne and recorded these two albums with Dio.  As much as I love Black Sabbath and its entire output, aside from the first six albums with Ozzy, the band never sounded as great and as powerful as they did on Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules. Hearing these original albums with remastered sound is great, but hearing it next to the magical live tracks brings you a whole new appreciation for what Black Sabbath Mach II brought to the table.  These albums feel like opening a historical time capsule from a time when metal music was still young and evolving. This is what repackaging and remastering look like when it’s done exceptionally well. The insert included in the discs are spectacular and are filled with tons of liner notes and great artwork, posters, magazine ads, and photos.
